Chapter 20

After leaving the room with Ainsley and Charlie we rejoined the party which had lost half its members because they were fucking in relative privacy. We were invited to the general orgy inside the main house, but we declined, claiming exhaustion.

We were exhausted, but it was a good sort of exhaustion. What I really remember about that night was getting one of the best night’s rest I had ever had.

There was a message waiting for me when we got up Sunday morning.

It might have been one of the worst mornings of my life.

“Shane, this is Linda, Melissa’s mother. Could you call us as soon as you can? It’s important. It’s about her.”

Gwen and I listened to the message together.

I had no idea what I should do.

“Call her!” Gwen insisted.

Occasionally I forgot that my wife also considered Lissa to be her girlfriend. Sort of.

The long and the short of the conversation with Linda was that Lissa had a breakdown of some sort after a date with Marshall the night before.

“She couldn’t get a hold of you,” Linda said.

“We were…out.”

“She got so worked up, so angry, so hysterical…she was saying things that made no sense. She said…she said…she said she was going to hurt herself.”

My entire body tensed up. “Where is she now? Is she okay?”

“She’s in the hospital.”
